DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
A holiday that I really dig (besides Halloween) is Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. There used to be an awesome festival in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland and every year it got more and more packed with people. It was a fantastic festival full of art, altars, amazing food, mariachis, dancers and vendors selling products from South America.
Some friends used to have a stall in the artist alley of the festival where they’d sell their beautiful altars and skeleton boxes and one year I even sold a few of my mini altars. One of my favorite parts of the festival was watching people decorating sugar skulls.
That’s were I got the inspiration for this little beauty. It’s a chalkware bust that I bought online that had been painted bronze with a fake patina. As soon as I saw it I thought she needed a makeover. I went to Michael’s today to buy some primer and got to work on it this evening. I just finished, but I’m thinking she might need a flower or two in her hair…
