PERSONAL FINANCE FOR ARTISTS
What is it?
In December of 2017 I purchased a class through CreativeLive called Personal Finance for Artists & Freelancers by Galia Gichon that has been invaluable to me and I want to share it with you. I put everything I’ve learned from this class into practice for several years now and I’m putting my stamp of approval on it.
Galia Gichon’s class has been life changing for me. Like many of you, I used to hold the false belief that investing and financial management was something that didn’t pertain to me. I never saw myself as someone who would be shopping for index or mutual funds or reading up on investing. Financial know-how can seem intimidating or inaccessible but it doesn’t have to be! I wish I had found this class many years ago, I would certainly be further along with my financial goals if I had. I’m thrilled about the progress I’ve made in the last few years and am looking forward to setting new goals for the future.
Why I love it!
Galia’s approach is straightforward, easy to digest, relatable and for someone like me who had no idea where to start, this is exactly what I needed. This class gave me a solid understanding of the fundamentals as well as the vocabulary to do further research. I still find myself going back and re-watching the lessons and getting something new from it each time.
Galia calls her company Down To Earth Finance which is so fitting because she makes financial jargon and concepts understandable and accessible which is the reason I’m suggesting this class in particular. I personally didn’t know the difference between a 401k, a Traditional IRA and a Roth IRA but now I do and I know which ones work for me. I didn’t know the difference between a mutual fund and an index fund. Now I’m comfortable with making decisions on which ones are right for my goals and what percentage of my savings I want to invest in them. This class opened a lot of doors for me financially and I hope it can do the same for you. All it takes is learning the basics and putting a tiny bit of money aside each month. You’ll be on your way to having more financial freedom in no time.
But how?!
Seriously, a tiny bit is all it takes. When I started I opened savings accounts with $5 and have watched those accounts grow over the years. I now have emergency savings, rainy day savings, savings for trips and vacations, a Roth IRA and investments. It’s less about the specific goals and more about having a direction to move in since the goals may change. It’s about having the freedom and the option to make choices that work for you. I am more in control of my finances now and it has been easy to make smart spending choices. It’s also exciting to watch my savings grow, pay off debt and set new goals.
Who is this class for?
While this class was created with creative freelancers and independent contractors in mind anyone can benefit from this information and apply the knowledge in their own lives. I went from being an independent contractor to being fully employed in January of 2018 and not much has changed as far as my approach and my goals. A seasoned investor, however, might not learn anything new here. This class is definitely for beginners and folks who need guidance with budgeting, creating savings plans and investing. If you are uncomfortable dealing with money, feel lost-at-sea with your finances or feel like you’re not capable of understanding this stuff, this class is for you.
How much does it cost?
In December of 2017, I bought the class for $90 but it has gone down significantly in price. At the time of writing this post it is regularly $49 but it’s currently on sale for the next several days for only $24! CreativeLive often has sales so if you’re reading this after the sale ends, you could hold out for another one and save yourself some money. I referred one of my best friends to the class and she purchased it for $30 during a sale. Even though I paid more I feel like it was the best $90 I’ve ever spent and I’m really grateful I found the class and started when I did.
While the links to Galia’s class are not affiliate links and I won’t make any money if you purchase her class, it’s valuable information and I think it’s important to talk about. The trope of the struggling and starving artist is tired and it’s time to change the narrative to one where creatives can support themselves with their work and be financially savvy.
Thanks for reading and I really hope you found this information helpful. If you end up taking Galia’s Personal Finance for Artists & Freelancers class I’d love to hear your thoughts and about your goals!
